It was both critically and commercially successful. The movie received several nominations at the Academy Awards and took home two Oscars including Best Sound Editing and a posthumous Best Supporting Actor award for the late Heath Ledger for his memorable portrayal of The Joker. It is the fourth film to reach the $1 billion ceiling and is currently the sixth highest grossing movie of all time.
